The Philippine Star: OOH LA LAI by Lai s. Reyes
It’s mind-boggling to think how technology has changed or improved our lives. For busy moms like me, it’s hard to imagine life without a cell phone, laptop, and other gadgets. For hardworking dads, smartphones, tablets, and a reliable Internet connection enable them to multi-task and work even on the go. For students, the latest gadgets allow them to get instant access to the information they need not only for school projects but their other interests like fashion, sports, and music. Today, their colorful backpacks aren’t so heavy anymore because most of their school reports and research papers are now stored in their USB flash drives. Oh, and have you ever heard of e-books?
It goes without saying that technology has a deep impact on every aspect of our lives. It has changed the way we live, interact, communicate, and do business.

Daniel Brown, 15-time Ironman, 8th placer Ultraman World Championship, and coach
To be labeled as an Ironman like Daniel, one has to complete a triathlon distance of swim 3.8k, bike 180k, and run 42.2km. Determination, discipline, stamina, and endurance aren’t all it takes to get the title. Daniel also relies on his gadgets — a heart rate monitor, power meters, and a sports watch — to be at the top of his game.
“These gadgets help me be more analytical. For example, by using the GPS, I am able to mark out distances to train and I can also measure average outputs of the athlete. You can now also download info such as heart rate data and power output for review and critique later,” Daniel explained.
As a running and triathlon on-line coach (http://www.thenextsteptri.com/), Daniel works on the go. “I need to have a small portable laptop to do programs and word docs. I also use an Android cell phone for social media and frequent texts,” he shared.
Epy Quizon, actor and photographer
When not busy with his showbiz engagements, Epy indulges in his other passion: photography. Epy’s cinematographer friend Ricardo Trofeo got him into it while he was an apprentice of his brother Eric Quizon in filmmaking.
“Photography was the most basic training for film,” pointed out Epy, who started toying with his Nikon FM2 in 1996.
During his free time, Epy checks out the shops at Cyberzone for the latest camera models and accessories.
Jack Madrid, country manager, Multiply.com Philippines, Inc.
What started out as a social network in 2004 has become a virtual shop for Filipino on-line entrepreneurs. Multiply has transformed itself into Southeast Asia’s biggest on-line shopping destination with over five million users.
When it comes to shopping for gadgets, Jack goes to SM Cyberzone. “SM Cyberzone is a one-stop-shop for gadgets. It’s the physical equivalent of shopping on Multiply,” he enthused. Jack Madrid still visits the malls to see what kind of stuff people are interested in and check out what they’re buying. “It allows me to observe people’s purchasing habits and see the latest trends.”
Caren Tevanny Mangaran, musician (General Luna), product endorser
“The iTouch made storing and listening to music so much fun and more convenient than ever,” said Caren.
She’s also a certified gamer and buys her RPG Games at SM Cyberzone.
“Cyberzone is a fashionable haven not just for techno geeks but also for musicians and gamers like me. It gives me that feel of being in the zone,” she shared.
Andre Paras, student, commercial model, and basketball varsity player of La Salle Greenhills
“Samsung Galaxy Tab makes studying more fun and exciting because you can put book apps and other materials with just a click of a button,” enthused Andre.
La Salle Greenhills started using e-books this year.
Aside from his Galaxy Tab, Andre loves to tinker with his iPod because “I really love listening to music. It makes me happy. I also use it to search the web (for short homeworks) and to check my e-mail.”
Rafa Alunan, hands-on dad, businessman
iPhone is Rafa’s favorite gadget hands down. It has the best combination of features that suits his lifestyle and interests. Best of all, it fits in his pocket.
“I realized how much I depended on it, when I left my iPhone in a cab. It literally felt like I lost my right leg. I was momentarily crippled,” Rafa shared.
The apps you choose, the music play-lists you can store, the pictures you keep, the compass, map, voice recorder, and note pad make this little mechanical tool a great companion.
“A close second will be my laptop. Put the two gadgets together and I can entertain myself while waiting for my kids,” he said.
Sharleen Subia-Cu-Unjieng, mom, lawyer, and entrepreneur (distributor of Mustela products in the Philippines)
The laptop and smart phone are some of the gadgets super woMOMs like Sharleen can’t live without. “With these tech wonders, matters are dealt with promptly because communication is fast and reliable,” she added.
Juggling her time as mom, lawyer, and entrepreneur, Sharleen tries her best to be organized and maintains a healthy lifestyle to be able to keep up with the everyday challenges of work.
“With a good Internet connection and my laptop or my smart phone, I can make calls, take photos, organize, surf, send and receive e-mails, and be in touch with Mustela principals in France, and almost everyone 24/7, whether locally or abroad, without delay. Must-have items are external drives, which I use to organize and store my files,” Sharleen explained.
Mustela offers baby skincare products that are natural and hypoallergenic.
Sharleen loves to visit Cyberzone because she is always on the lookout for new products and gadgets.
“Cyberzone offers a wide array of choices and brands which complements anybody’s budget, preference, and need. They also offer up-to-date gadgets, so you need not go anywhere else to find what you are looking for,” she added.
Vernon Go, Publisher, Pulp magazine
The iPhone is the first gadget Vernon looks for as soon as he wakes up. “I would scroll through my Twitter, review e-mails,and delete unwanted SMS. So, usage-wise, it’s definitely my fave gadget.”
But for pure joy and entertainment, he turns to his PS3. “My wife Happee bought me these motion sensor controls that insert into a machine gun casing, and provides an instant Navy Seal fantasy escape outlet for me. I love it!” he added.
Alyanna Martinez, celebrity stylist and blogger
For Alyanna, technology has definitely made communication much easier and faster.
“This helps a lot with my fast-paced job,” she enthused. As a celebrity stylist and blogger, Alyanna relies heavily on her iPad, MacBook, Mac mini, iMac, and iPhone. “I love how Apple makes everything so simple, yet still so powerful for multi-tasking, connecting, and synching with each other,” she gushed.
Alyanna frequents Cyberzone to shop for reasonably priced gadgets and computer accessories.
Dr. Martin Camara, director, Clinics Intercare Healthcare Centers
Technology provides affordable ways for doctors like Martin Camara to store and access data on a regular basis.
“I have a specialized application on the iPad for my profession, which allows me to take a video of the patients in motion. I can do a frame-by-frame analysis and get to the underlying movement pattern that could be causing their pain or dysfunction. It allows me to measure angles, do a postural analysis, check alignment and imbalances,” Dr. Martin explained.
His clinic boasts a state-of-the-art infrared technology system called Optogait, which measures strength stability and flexibility of muscle groups and ligaments in our body.
“I use the iPad to explain my findings to the patient. The tablet component is great for that. Rather than read off reports and MRIs, X-rays on paper or film, I read them in the iPad so I can draw on them and circle the problem area,” Dr. Martin added.
Do doctors still use pagers?
“No,” he hastily replied. “iPhone text messaging rocks!”
