The Mall of Asia Arena was recently launched as world-class venue for the world-class Filipino talents in Icons, a rare gathering of some of the country’s top musical talents.
Vice President Jejomar Binay was the guest of honor during the ribbon cutting ceremony, which took place in the Arena’s Marina Way.
Pasay City mayor Tony Calixto and his wife Edna, Felicidad Sy, Josefina Mendiola, and SM Prime Holdings president Hans T. Sy joined him, after which they unveiled a marker in honor of “world class Filipino talent.”
They then proceeded inside to watch Icons.
This once-in-a-lifetime concert featured some of the biggest names in the Philippine music industry in a program that showcased its different genres. Hosted by Concert Queen Pops Fernandez and APO Hiking Society’s Jim Paredes, the event also marked the debut of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra led by Ryan Cayabyab.
The show began with a medley of Jose Mari Chan songs superbly interpreted by Christian Bautista and The CompanY, and of course, the man himself, Jose Mari Chan. It was then the turn of some of the country’s top divas—Rachel Alejandro, Dulce, and Verni Varga to awe the audience with their divine performances.
Freddie Aguilar then thrilled the audience with his iconic song “Anak” that has been translated in several languages; while Richard Poon, Juris, Jed Madela, and Piolo Pascual then sung a medley movie and teleserye soundtracks composed by Ogie Alcasid. Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) head Ogie himself then appeared for a duet of heartwarming songs with his wife, songbird Regine Velasquez.
Comedians Wally Bayola, Jose Manalo, and Pokwang then left the audience in stitches with their impersonations of Willie Revillame, Martin Nievera,Gary V., and Mommy Dionisia. Rock then ruled with a performance byBamboo and the G-Force.
World-class talents Lea Salonga and Arnel Pineda then showcased Filipino pride with their amazing performances; while Erik Santos, Martin Nievera, andBasil Valdez touched the audience with their heartwarming ballads and wonderful voices.
The highlight of the event was a video tribute to SM Founder and ChairmanHenry Sy, Sr.; after which all the performers gathered together for “The Impossible Dream” finale.
