THE Philippine Postal (PhilPost) Corporation together with the Department of Education (DepEd), Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), and SM Supermalls held the 2nd National Letter Writing Day on Thursday at The Annex of SM City Davao.
PhilPost area director for eastern Mindanao Bernardito Gonzales said in an interview that the activity aims to develop the writing skills of the students and to correct the “jejemon grammar” which is a result of the new technologies today.
“We want the children to write to their loved ones that they have not written, ang text man gud ma-erase and card ma-album (text messages can be erased while post cards can be placed in an album),” Gonzales said.
DepEd 11 spokesperson Jenelito “Dodong” Atillo, in his speech during the program, said that “instant communication is good but not actually very good because it is distorting communication.”
“So values somehow are affected and via this effort together with PhilPost and the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino we are trying to do something everything not only about communication because it somehow has an effect on everything,” he said.
The event, according to Atillo, was made possible through a memorandum of agreement among the PhilPost, Deped and KWF to make October 9 as the National Letter Writing Day.
The students invited were grades seven to nine coming from selected private and public schools.
After the letter writing at The Annex they also went to different schools to conduct the same activity.
