SM Department Stores has announced it will donate P10, for every P500 worth of customer purchase, to families affected by storm Ondoy.
The donation will be coursed through SM Foundation, the socio-civic arm of the SM Group of Companies, the company said in a statement posted on its Web site.
At the height of Ondoy’s fury, SM Marikina’s management allowed 1,400 people to stay overnight at the mall and provided the stranded mallgoers and employees of SM and mall tenants with coffee and sandwiches and benches. The mall also deployed doctors and nurses, some of them volunteers, to provide assistance during medical emergency situations, the statement said.
SM Marikina also waived fees for its parking area and allowed people to park their cars overnight. There was free parking for residents of nearby areas, such as the ill-fated Provident Villages, and those who stayed in their cars were provided with free blankets.
Several other private companies have embarked on their respective relief campaign.
International Container Terminal Services Inc. has announced that its next tournament, the ICTSI-Royal Northwoods Classic, will be a venue to help the victims of the recent storm. ICTSI, in partnership with operations group MJ Carr Golf Management, said it would donate P120,000 to the Caritas Foundation for the typhoon victims.
ABS-CBN Foundation, through Sagip Kapamilya, has collected P24 million as of yesterday morning from its local viewers and The Filipino Channel subscribers abroad.
GMA Kapuso Foundation said it accepts donations in cash and in kind. The drive has raised more than P17 million at press time, excluding a P1-million donation from Manny Pacquiao.
The two networks are also encouraging viewers to volunteer and help repack the goods or deliver them to the affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Nurses Association has launched emergency relief operations with chapters pooling their resources for the affected families. The association said it also mobilized 100 volunteers in partnership with Philippine Medical Association to provide medical and health assistance to residents of Quezon City (West Riverside, Frisco, Novaliches and Tatalon), Pasig, Marikina, Cainta, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga and Laguna.
