CLIMATE change is considered to be the greatest challenge of the times. Earthquakes, floods, droughts, power shortages and global warming are some of the perils we experience due to climate change.

SM Supermalls, staunch advocate of environmental initiatives and ecofriendly programs, together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Earth Day Network Philippines Inc., celebrated Earth Day 2010 recently with the theme ‘Hamon ng Panahon, Climate Change, 10 Milyung Solusyon (Kilos na! Ngayon na!) [Challenge of the Times, Climate Change, 10 Million Solutions Act! [(Now!)]’ in all SM malls nationwide.

Through its environmental committee, SM has created environmental initiatives, eco-friendly programs and corporate social responsibility efforts.

SM also actively promotes solid waste management, recycling, clean air, water conservation and energy efficiency among its mall tenants, customers, communities and stakeholders.

An estimated 8,000 tenants now fully support the solid-waste segregation projects of SM Supermalls. SM has saved approximately 20,000 trees through its recycling program.

At the Earth Day celebration, SM reaffirmed its commitment to further promote programs that nurture the environment and the country’s natural resources.

Spearheading the Earth Day celebration at the SM Mall of Asia was Annie S. Garcia, president of SM Supermalls, welcoming guests, participants and environmental advocates who attended the Earth Day celebration.
