Quezon City, Philippines – August 14, 2025. SM City North Edsa, the first SM mall and now celebrating its 40th Anniversary, has become home to the third Book Nook in the Philippines—furthering SM Cares’ commitment to providing inclusive, community-centered learning spaces for all Filipinos.
Situated in a city known as a commercial, cultural, and educational hub, the newly launched Book Nook is strategically located near numerous schools and universities, making it an ideal gathering place for students, educators, and families. The reading space is designed to be free and open to the public—encouraging storytelling, reading, and meaningful community connection.

The launch of the SM City North Edsa Book Nook coincides with the celebration of Buwan ng Wika, and was marked by a well-attended Baybayin workshop led by Howie Severino, a respected journalist and documentarist. The session introduced attendees to the importance of preserving Filipino scripts and identity, and set the tone for the space as a venue for cultural and educational exchange.
“The Book Nook at SM City North Edsa reflects our deep belief in the power of education and culture to build inclusive communities,” said Shereen Sy, Pioneer of Book Nook for SM Supermalls. “We are proud to support initiatives that not only promote literacy but also celebrate Filipino heritage and identity, especially during Buwan ng Wika.”
“Baybayin is not just our native script – it’s a window to our pre-colonial civilization. We were a literate people long before the Europeans arrived,” shared Howie Severino. “Book Nooks are a wonderful idea for encouraging reading, and offering opportunities for learning for free.”

The Book Nook at SM City North Edsa marks the third location of this initiative, following the successful launches in other SM Malls. As part of SM Cares’ broader CSR advocacy, Book Nook underscores the organization’s goal to promote literacy, education, and inclusive access to learning for all.
Through spaces like this, SM Cares continues to bring its values of accessibility, inclusivity, and community development to life—one story at a time.
Celebrating 40 Super Years of Evolving With Every You, SM Supermalls—one of Southeast Asia’s largest mall developers with 88 malls in the Philippines—marks four decades of growing with Filipinos and becoming a trusted space where diverse lifestyles and generations connect, while continuously evolving to redefine the malling experience through sustainability, innovation, and a deep commitment to shaping the future of retail and urban life with inclusive and meaningful experiences.
