Efforts Divert More Than 241 Tons of Waste from Coastal Areas

MANILA, Philippines Protecting the planet and preserving its resources begins with collective action. Recognizing that even simple efforts can create meaningful change, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm SM Cares, continues to empower and collaborate with communities in advancing the SM Green Movement.

Through the spirit of Bayanihan, SM recently conducted a series of successful coastal cleanups that helped divert 200,000 kilograms of coastal waste from the ocean in 2025 alone — equivalent to the weight of approximately 142 compact SUVs.

“Done collectively and consistently with the help of our partners, every cleanup creates a meaningful impact that will benefit generations to come,” said Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability.

Since 2015, when SM Supermalls first joined the International Coastal Cleanup, SM-led initiatives have mobilized more than 50,000 SM employees, government partners, students, community volunteers, and environmental advocates. Through united volunteerism, community engagement has become a vital part of SM’s sustainability journey, promoting shared responsibility in protecting the environment and building a more sustainable future.

These cleanup efforts are made possible through the strong collaboration and shared commitment of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Local Government Units (LGUs), and other community partners.

Enhanced waste management through community education

Under the SM Green Movement’s comprehensive approach to waste management, SM Supermalls also leverages its nationwide reach to empower communities in properly segregating waste. SM Supermalls’ corporate partners assist in recycling collected materials to further reduce landfill waste.

“SM is doing its part as an institution in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and encouraging more people to protect our marine ecosystems,” said Silerio.

SM invites environmental advocates, community groups, and members of the public to join the movement and take part in its quarterly Coastal Cleanup drives. Interested participants may register through the SM Malls Online App, where upcoming cleanup schedules and sign-up details will be made available.
