Film is a proven visual medium that can create a wide scale impact. With the success of An Inconvenient Truth, many filmmakers and environment advocates have turned to film to send out a message to mankind and present the state of our planet. With this initiative in mind, the SM Cares program has launched the Green Film Festival in SM Malls across the country. Now on its second run, the film festival showcases several environment friendly films which aim to increase the awareness of the people regarding the issues that beset our planet.

In partnership with the Department of Education, The SM Green Film Festival also targets to widen the awareness of public school students regarding climate change and what they can do to help save our environment. It gives students an opportunity to see the world from a broader perspective, making them appreciate the environment and its beauty even more. Over 70,000 students have already attended the film festival.

Some of the films that have been screened in the film festival include:

1. The 11th Hour-A documentary produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. This film gathers the perspectives of different environment advocates and experts and scientists such as Stephen Hawking and former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Instead of merely using charts, graphics and presentation, The 11th Hour lets these personalities speak from their own perspective, giving an expanded and comprehensive view of the impact of climate change and how we can switch to alternative sources of energy.

2. State of the Planet – Produced by BBC and Discovery Channel and narrated by David Attenborough, this documentary tells the state of the rainforests in the world and the ecological crisis that the planet is in.

3. March of the Penguins – This Academy Award winning documentary tells the annual journey of the Emperor penguins to Antarctica. This has already been translated to numerous languages, with a Filipino version narrated by Sharon Cuneta.

4. Planet Earth – originally an II-part series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit, Planet Earth is the most extensive documentary of our planet. It features an expansive and breathtaking view of the different habitats and some never-before-seen footage of locations around the world.

5. Warnings from the Wild – Like An Inconvenient Truth, Warnings from the Wild present hard evidence that the temperature of the Earth is increasing. The documentary presents signs such as the decreasing number of polar bears, movements of animals such as the keel-billed toucans, Adelie penguins and swallows and the earlier blooming of oak trees in Great Britain. In support of the rest of the environmental programs of SM Cares, the Green Film Festival is a perfect medium in educating people about these pressing environmental issues. As part of their corporate social responsibility, SM Prime continues its commitment to achieve sustainable solutions in creating a greener future and spread the word about conserving our resources and practice eco-friendly efforts.
