Giving hope to women affected by breast cancer, one cup at a time

Every October, there is a worldwide campaign to raise breast cancer awareness and to encourage measures that could improve, or even save the lives of those who have fallen victim to the now beatable disease. The iCanServe Foundation aims to inform the public that there is a cure for breast cancer, especially if it is detected early. This life threatening disease can be prevented by the simple act of diligently getting checked.

But even outside this month, there is a need for consistent education and proactive prevention. With the Philippines having the most cases of breast cancer in Asia, SM Woman has taken this message to heart and is now fanning the flame to help improve the life of every woman.

Recently, SM Woman partnered with the iCanServe Foundation and with leading Thai lingerie brand Sabina, for a Sewing Cup Sewing Heart activity, launched exclusively in The SM Store in the Philippines. During the event, supporters and guests were invited to sew 250 Sabina sewing cups—hypoallergenic bra fillers—for women who have undergone a mastectomy, that were then donated to the iCanServe Foundation.

Sabina also has the distinction of carrying the very first Asian-made sewing bra. It is filled with a padding, which can be adjusted according to any cup size by filling a provided pouch with just enough LLDPE Plastic Beads, highly purified plastic beads that contain zero harmful chemicals and is round in shape so it does not irritate the skin or pierce through clothes. The Ministry of Industry of Thailand also certifies it as a standard of product “Polyethylene.”

Therefore, it will not cause any irritation or have any harmful effects when it comes in contact with skin.

With this simple but essential innovation, they empower women who have experienced, or are currently going through, the life-changing trial that is breast cancer.

The Sewing Cup Sewing Heart activity was graced by iCanServe Foundation’s chairperson Libet Virata and president Tang Singson. Among the guests were Martha Revilla Schulze, Bettina Osmeña, Lilibeth Campos, Frannie Jacinto, and Bibeth Orteza who also participated in the sewing activity.
