MANILA, Philippines — Sacks of rice and “noche buena” packages were handed out to various benefactors of the “North Pole Christmas,” a Christmas dis-play launched at SM Cit y North EDSA Saturday night, where replica houses at the mall ‘s Sky Garden will be shown throughout the holidays.

The ceremony was attended by Mrs. Gloria Sy and top officials of the SM Group who handed out early Christmas gifts to Gawad Kalinga recipients.

Children from the life givers and star horizon and members of the Kaisang Buhay Foundation Inc. filled the dome of the Sky Garden during the launching.

Renee Bacani, regional operations manager of SM, said the sky garden was transformed into the Santa Claus den to allow the kids from all walks of life to experience a memorable Christmas when they visit the mall.

Bacani s a id that the exhibit is the company’s way of providing the public a merry Christmas.

Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista, who was guest o f honor, shared his family’s holiday experiences when they used to go shopping in SM Cubao, dine at nearby Bamboo House, the favorite Chinese restaurant of his father, and view the popular, moving Christmas display at COD Department Store.

He cited SM as the pillar of malling in the country, stressing its significant contribution to provide employment to thousands and comfort and enjoyment for citizens while having time to relax and enjoy shopping.

The exhibit features six houses where the public, especially children, will experience Christmas in other parts of the world.

A brief film clipon what to expect in the six houses — North Pole, Santa’s Den, Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen, Santa’s Mailroom, Santa’s Toy Shop and Reindeer Barn — were shown drawing wild cheers from children in the audience.

As the houses on display were lighted , hundreds of mallgoers milled around them while others flocked inside makeshift structures enjoying a rare experience of a Christmas in November. The six houses will be on full display up to January 10, 2012.
