THE BIGGEST and richest bowling tournament in the country concludes today as SM holds the grand slam finals of its first-ever Millionaire’s Cup.
To take place at the Activity Center Mega Fashion Hall of SM Megamall, the grand slam finals is the culmination of a more than month long of exciting competition among some of the best local amateur bowlers.
Held to coincide with SM Bowling’s 25th anniversary, and long term designed to rekindle the Filipinos’ passion for the sport of bowling, the Millionaire’s Cup offers the winner a P2-million top prize plus a brand-new car.
The Millionaire’s Cup is an open division tournament for male and female amateur bowlers, and a member of the Philippine Bowling Congress, with an average score of not more than 210. The Millionaire’s Cup is a singles handicap event based on the participating bowlers’ current averages entered in the competition.
TOURNAMENT FLOW
The Cup began with preliminary rounds on Nov. 1, hosted by the SM Bowling and Leisure Center in its centers in SM Fairview, SM North EDSA, SM Valenzuela, SM Megamall, SM South Mall, SM Mall of Asia, SM Cebu and SM Lanang Davao.
In the preliminaries, the competitors played four sets of three games where multiple tries were allowed.
The Center Finals offered the winner P100,000, P50,000 to the runner-up and P25,000 to the third placer.
From the Center Finals played in the eight SM Bowling Centers, 32 bowlers emerged as qualifiers for the National Finals.
The National Finals, in turn, determined the top 16 bowlers who will play in the Grand Slam Finals, where the last bowler standing after all the knockout rounds shall be declared the first winner of the SM Bowling Millionaire’s Cup.
In the Grand Slam Finals, the fifth to 16th placers shall receive P25,000 each. The second and third runner-ups shall be awarded with P250,000 and P150,000, respectively. The first runner-up of the Grand Slam Finals will be given P500,000, and the overall champion will be awarded with P2 million plus a brand-new Chevrolet Sonic.
The tournament fees for the tournament were priced as follows: Leg center registration fee (P5,000), Qualifying fee for three game series (P1,000), Leg Center Finals (P7,500), Grand Slam Finals (P20,000).
