SM Foundation, through its executive director, Debbie Sy, mobilized Operation: Tulong Express calamity response program to extend assistance to victims of the recent flashfloods owing to continuous rains in Cagayan de Oro City.

Heavy rains also swelled the Cagayan de Oro and Iponan rivers causing floods that affected 46 out of 70 barangays in the city.

Almost 6, 000 families were affected by the flashflood on January 3 while 15, 311 families or 79, 383 persons more were affected by the January 13 flashflood.

Two hundred fifty-three houses were destroyed, 544 were partially damaged while seven persons were reported dead.

Upon the request of the SM Cagayan de Oro mall manager, Paul Ferrer, for assistance, SM Foundation Inc. immediately sent relief goods using the SM Mall as the nerve center of the relief efforts. The foundation assisted 2,000 families in barangays Macasandig, Tibasak, Carmen, Balulang, Bayabas, Puntod and Consolation and to SM employees affected by the flood.
