December 30, 2013 — SM Supermalls, in line with its sustainable environment advocacy, spearheaded a tree-planting activity at the North Luzon Expressway Meycauayan Interchange, in partnership with the Manila North Tollways Corp. (MNTC) in November.
The site, near the north and southbound toll plazas, was planted with over a hundred tree saplings provided by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) from their plant nursery in Quezon City.
Employees of SM Supermalls and staff members of MNTC participated in the environmental initiative. MNTC officials who partook in the event included Vice President for Construction and Engineering Raul Ignacio; Cherry dela Rea; and Environment and Safety Specialist Alan Cariño. In addition to this, the tollway company has also organized an ongoing project dubbed “Greening the Nlex,” a program that aims to plant 20,000 trees along expressway.
This new partnership of SM Supermalls with MTNC is in line with the company’s “Grow a Million Trees Project” through SM Foundation and SM Cares. To further support their advocacy, the mall developer along with its employees plan to keep a watchful eye on trees they have planted in the next three years until they turn them over for preservation by the DENR.
Part of the advocacy of SM Supermalls is manifested in the programs on environment of SM Cares, where they make sure that sustainability is complemented in the construction and operations of each mall. Even more, each mall is on the forefront of different activities, events and programs that help conserve and protect the environment.
