SM was awarded four Lakan ng Lawa Awards by the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) for its good environmental performance. These include a Green Award for Pollution Control to the SM Corporate Office, as well as two Blue Awards to SM City San Lazaro and SM City North EDSA for its Commitment to Keep the Earth Clean and Green.

The Lakan ng Lawa are given every year by the LLDA to recognize socially responsible organizations in the Laguna Lake Region for good environmental performance in compliance with its effluent standards and with the regulatory requirements. A Blue Award is given for the first year of compliance, and a Green Award is given to companies who have complied for two straight years.

Laguna de Bay is the largest body of fresh water in the Philippines and the third largest fresh water body in Southeast Asia. It is significant not only because of its size, but also because it is a major navigation lane for passenger boats, a source of water for nearby hydro-electrical plants, and helps in flood control. More than that, many forms of livelihood – aquaculture, agriculture, and industry – revolve around the lake.

Since the lake has become a symbol of life for many Filipinos, the LLDA and the DENR have been working hand in hand to protect and sustain this water resource.

Spearheaded by its Environmental Committee, the SM Supermalls has not only been on the forefront of compliance, but has also initiated different projects like its Trash for Cash and Green Film Festival to create more awareness about the environment. These efforts have been recognized by different civic and government organizations, the latest of which is the Lakan ng Lawa Awards.
