The United Children’s Fund (Unicef) and actress Anne Curtis have joined forces to launch a series of storybooks for children.
In a launching ceremony at the SM North Edsa, Unicef introduced the Children’s First! Storybooks, a collection of six books that promote reading and inspire children’s imagination. Curtis, Unicef’s Celebrity Advocate, was present during the launching as she is the author of the one six children’s books entitled Anita The Duckling Diva.
Unicef Philippines Representative Lotta Sylwander said the storybooks, which are written in Filipino and English texts for children three years and above, talk about different topics such as overcoming shyness, cultivating friendships and reaching for one’s dreams.
The books are presented in colorful illustrations to fire up children’s sense of curiosity and wonder.
“Children learn language quickly and easily through hearing and singing songs, having stories told or read to them, repeating rhymes and playing games. Having a supportive environment in these early years will help children get ready for school and life-long learning,” Sylwander said.
The launching was made possible in partnership with SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls.
Curtis, who had a read-along and book signing after the launching, said she is very happy that she has written her first children’s book which she hoped will boost children’s self-esteem and self-confidence.
“I believe that children should be given all the emotional and moral support they need as they grow up so they can express themselves with confidence and explore their full talent,” Curtis said.
Apart from teaching important lessons to children, the books also contain child-friendly version of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), as well as internet safety reminders for young people.
Slywander said proceeds from the book will benefit Unicef’s programs for children in the Philippines and around the world.
An Illustrations Exhibit at the 3rd level, The Block, SM North Edsa was also opened showcasing the colorful illustrations in the storybooks. It will run from Feb. 20 to 25, 2016.
