MANILA, Philippines – An eighth grader from Quezon City won the grand prize in the letter-writing contest of the Philippine Postal Corp., PHLPost said yesterday.
Erica Angeli Seno of San Francisco High School in Quezon City bested 3,000 students in the 4th Simultaneous National Letter-Writing contest held at SM Supermalls during the World Post Day celebration on Oct. 8, 2016.
The participants were Grade 7 to Grade 9 students from all over the country. They were asked to write a 1,000-word, original and unpublished letter adhering to the theme “Sulat ng Bayani sa Henerasyon Ngayon” (letter of a hero for the current generation).
The 13-year-old Seno wrote under the pen name of Dr. Jose Rizal. In her letter, she encouraged the youth to stand for what is right and start the change that they want from themselves.
For winning the grand prize, Seno will receive P10,000 and a certificate.
The second prize winner is Angel Joy Abad of Ateneo de Davao University. She will receive P7,000 and a certificate.
Third placer is Jaira Patricia Ebron of the College of Immaculate Conception in Cabanatuan City. She will receive P5,000 and a certificate.
PHLPost’s letter-writing competition was done in partnership with SM Supermalls and Department of Education.
Meanwhile, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) launched its 46th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People.
The PHLPost is encouraging all Filipino elementary and high school students aged 15 and below to join the international letter-writing contest to express their creativity in writing letters.
The theme of the letters is “Imagine you are an advisor to the new United Nations Secretary General; which world issue would you help him tackle first and how would you advise him to solve it?”
The winning entry from the Philippines would be submitted to the UPU as our country’s official entry to the 46th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People in Berne, Switzerland.
